South East London town garden

This South East London garden was designed as a peaceful retreat—somewhere to step away from the pace of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Rather than recreating a traditional Japanese garden, the design draws subtle inspiration from Japanese principles of balance, simplicity and restraint, creating a space that feels calm, immersive and timeless.

The layout takes its cue from the geometry of a traditional Japanese hand fan, with paving lines radiating from a central point to gently organise the space. A restrained palette of black limestone and golden gravel establishes contrast and harmony, while existing gravel was carefully repurposed, reducing waste and allowing materials from the original garden to become part of its new story.

Planting was designed to complement the mature trees already on site, surrounding the patio with layered greenery that softens the hard landscaping and strengthens the garden's sense of enclosure. Texture and form take precedence over colour, creating an atmosphere that evolves gently through the seasons while remaining tranquil throughout the year.

More than simply introducing a Japanese influence, the garden offers a place to pause. It demonstrates how thoughtful design, carefully composed planting and a restrained material palette can transform a compact urban space into a restorative sanctuary that encourages moments of quiet reflection every day.
