Designed as a natural extension of the home, this shaded back garden in Brockley transforms an underused outdoor space into a welcoming outdoor living space for relaxing, entertaining and everyday living. The design embraces the garden's sheltered character, creating spaces that feel calm, immersive and connected to the house.

Building on the existing patio, a carefully restrained palette of materials creates a seamless flow through the garden, allowing each space to feel distinct while remaining part of a cohesive whole. A sculptural corten steel screen provides a striking focal point, subtly guiding movement and creating a sense of discovery as the secluded seating area gradually reveals itself beyond. A generous sleeper-built raised bed adds both structure and flexibility, doubling as informal seating for gatherings with family and friends.

Layered planting draws the eye through the garden, weaving together existing trees and shrubs with a rich tapestry of foliage that celebrates shade rather than fighting against it. Contrasting textures and varied forms create depth and enclosure, transforming the space into a lush, green sanctuary that feels peaceful throughout the seasons.

Rather than simply extending the patio, the design encourages daily life to spill outdoors. From quiet mornings with a coffee to evenings spent entertaining friends, the garden now offers a series of inviting spaces that make spending time outside feel effortless and rewarding.
