A flavour of Japan

South East London town garden

The brief for this South East London garden was to create a tranquil, sun-filled retreat — restoring greenery that had diminished over time and introducing a subtle flavour of Japan without creating a literal Japanese garden.

The design takes inspiration from the geometry of a traditional Japanese hand fan, with paving lines radiating from a central point to shape the space. A restrained palette of black limestone and golden gravel establishes contrast and calm, while existing gravel was repurposed to reduce waste.

Planting was designed to complement mature trees already on site, creating a layered green enclosure around the patio. The result is a lush yet controlled composition — a quiet urban oasis rooted in balance, restraint and harmony.
