Mediterranean front garden

Blackheath, London

This front garden in Blackheath was designed to make the most of its sunny aspect, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean planting that thrives in warm, dry conditions. A restrained palette of natural materials and soft, muted colours creates a calm and welcoming approach to the house, while complementing the character of the existing Victorian pathway.

The planting scheme focuses on drought-tolerant species that provide year-round structure, seasonal interest and texture, whilst remaining low maintenance. Gravel mulch helps to suppress weeds, retain moisture and reinforce the Mediterranean aesthetic.

As well as creating an attractive entrance, the design needed to accommodate practical storage for everyday living. A bespoke bin store and a bike box were carefully integrated into the space to minimise visual impact. The bin store was constructed using gabions filled with natural pebbles, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the wider material palette. A green roof further softens the structure, helping it sit comfortably within the planting and contributing to the garden's biodiversity.

The result is a functional yet elegant front garden that combines practical requirements with a relaxed Mediterranean character, creating an inviting first impression throughout the year. By favouring resilient planting and permeable materials, the garden is well suited to the increasingly warm and dry conditions experienced in London, helping to ensure it remains attractive and sustainable for years to come.
