The arrival garden

Beckenham, London

The journey through a garden can begin long before you reach the main outdoor space. This side garden was designed to transform the route from driveway to rear garden into an experience in its own right, replacing a cluttered, underused passage with a welcoming entrance that hints at the landscape beyond.

A contemporary palette of corten steel and anthracite creates a refined backdrop that complements both the architecture of the house and the existing decking in the main garden. Carefully selected shade-tolerant planting softens the structure, while multi-stem shrubs introduce height and enclosure. The warm tones of the planting echo the rich patina of the corten steel, creating a cohesive palette that feels calm and established.

Practicality was just as important as aesthetics. A bespoke bin store discreetly organises recycling and waste, transforming what had previously been an untidy collection of bins into an integrated feature that is both attractive and easy to use. By removing visual clutter, the entrance feels more spacious, ordered and inviting.

Rather than revealing everything at once, the design invites you to slow down and enjoy the journey. The main garden remains hidden until the very end, allowing the side garden to become an experience in its own right before the space opens up beyond. What was once simply a passage has become a memorable part of the garden itself—a welcoming threshold that the client describes as her own secret garden, proving that even the spaces in between deserve thoughtful design.
